Best of the Week: 29 March 2015

Nevyana Boycheva

This Bulgaria may not be that bad after all. Last week I went to the Bulgarian version of a Boiler Room party, an event which took place on the 19th floor of a hotel and had as its main act Thristian from Boiler Room. Which was pretty cool.

This Friday not even having to leave the coziness of my own hometown I went to a music production workshop lead by Bulgarian-German producer and DJ Stefan Goldmann. Later Mr. Goldmann treated us to an amazing set of house and techno and I just couldn’t make myself leave and that’s why our weekly roundup is happening on a Sunday.

But I think I have a good excuse.

1. Lxury – ‘ Square 1’ feat Deptford Goth (Joe Goddard Remix)

Taken from an upcoming remix EP to be released on April 6 on Greco-Roman, this gem is slick and funky and smells like summer.

2. Merle – ‘Fannie Likes to Dance (Real Hot Mix)’

This was an accidental catch but it’s one of those moments when you’re glad you clicked the play button. This is a ‘hot re-edition of a rare gem from Merwyn Sanders, founding member of Virgo Four. Included on his lost EP “2000 (And We’re Still Here)”, originally self-released on Christabel Records, now getting repressed by Stripped & Chewed’

We were unhealthily obsessed with SBTRKT‘s debut album and definitely not as impressed with the follow-up, BUT these two new tracks are still good news. He has definitely taken on a bit different musical path in recent years but what’s impressive is that no matter what he does, it always sounds fresh and innovative.

4. Ptaki – ‘Nie Zabijaj’

Another accidental catch from the deep waters of Soundcloud is Polish producer Ptaki who has a brand new release coming out in May on Transatlantyk.

5. MIX: Tried + True Co.’s Selector Series | Jo Def

Soulful hip-hop and juke mix from one of my favorite Soulection producers Jo Def!

6. FREE DOWNLOAD: Jackmaster & Jasper James – Live from Mitchell Street

You’re probably thinking that this mix is full of heat and you’re absolutely right.

7. Four Tet & Jamie xx Essential Mix

Essential listen, no comment needed. Stream it via iPlayer.

8. VIDEO: Jamie xx & Romy – Loud Places

The news for the upcoming Jamie xx album produced quite a stir in the music world. ‘In Colour’ will be released on June 1 via Young Turks. This collaborative track between Jamie xx and his lifelong friend and music partner Romy xx is quite quite quite cheesy…but we like it a lot and we’re not afraid to say it out loud.

Head over to Jamie xx‘s official website to check out the rest of the new tracks which surfaced.

9. VIDEO: Electronic Beats’ Slices Feature with KiNK

Electronic Beats come to Sofia to chat with Strahil Velchev aka KiNK, visit his studio in his parents’ flat and take a few artistic shot of socialistic blocks of flats in the Bulgarian capital. Very entertaining and KiNK is, as usual, super inspiring.
