Best of the Week: 4 April, 2015

Best of the Week 4 April Kendrick Lamar Prosumer JETS machinedrum jimmy edgar
Raya Raycheva

The most important thing this week is to enter our very first competition and win a Behringer mixer.

Don’t worry, I will remind you again.

Another important thing is that both me and Nevy are super duper busy with these magical unicorn things called jobs – OMG WE FINALLY HAVE THOSE! – so the quantity of blogging will probably suffer in the near future. Naturally, the quality will continue to be top notch. Tehee!

Now let’s check out the last week in quality music!

1. JETS – ‘The Chants’

Congratulations to Nevy for there’s gonna be new JETS stuff soon and she’ll probably freak out once the full ‘The Chants’ EP is out.

For now, stay calm and listen to the title track.

2. SET: Prosumer & Murat Tepeli in the Mixmag Lab LDN

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Prosumer is a total don and I respect him deeply. So of course I was excited to find him in the Lab in the good company of Murat Tepeli and a pair of turntables.

Big up!

3. COVERS: Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def covers MF DOOM

Yesterday I decided to try and pick the 10 albums I’d take with me on a desert island. Why? I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about it a lot on the tube lately cause I noticed I tend to listen to longtime favourite full albums when I’m on the go and that knowing those releases so well provides me a beautiful sense of comfort and enjoyment.

Anyway, I’m still working on my list and while I’m nowhere near finished, I know for a fact that Mos Def’s ‘Black On Both Sides’ will make the cut. That album’s genius changed me.

Now Mos Def is paying tribute to MF Doom and I can’t help but feel that there’s a similar sentiment going on in this…

4. ALBUM STREAM: Shlohmo – ‘Dark Red’

Shlohmo’s album ‘Dark Red’ comes out on April 7 but until then you can listen to it in its entirety thanks to the New York Times’ Press Play.

5. VIDEO: Kendrick Lamar – ‘King Kunta’

Kendrick! Everything Kendrick!

6. VIDEO: Nocturnal Sunshine – ‘Take Me There’

Nocturnal Sunshine is an alias for our beloved electronic queen Maya Jane Coles and is the first track from her upcoming first album under that name.

God, she’s so fucking cool.

7. VIDEO: Scuba – ‘All I Think About Is Death’

Gotta love a relatable electronic track and Scuba produces plenty of those*.

*If you’re me or have a brain similar to mine (in which case, I’m so sorry).

8. AFX – ‘Every Day’ (Drew Lustman/FaltyDL cover)

FaltyDL covered AFX aka Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin and apparently some people were jerks about it, forcing one of our favourite New Yorkers to shut down the comment section for the track.

It’s normal not to understand why people can be such twats online, Drew, don’t sweat it. We still love you.

9. Lido & Canblaster – ‘Superspeed/Rush Hour’

Lido & Canblaster are preparing a 6-track collaborative EP to be released on Belgian label Pelican Fly and these two babies are from it.

10. VIDEO: Bok Bok & Sweyn Jupiter – ‘Papaya Lipgloss’

I thought this would be the perfect entry to end the round-up because there’s something so warm and feel-good about it and you just gotta end on a positive note, right? Especially after you’ve professed to thinking about death all day log.

Okay, enough for this week. I need to go to Ikea.

Friendly reminder to enter our competition here.
