Free compilation: Winter in Jakarta (Jakarta Records, 2015)

Jakarta Records - Winter in Jakarta
Raya Raycheva

Jakarta Records is a Berlin/Cologne-based label which, as it turned out when we finally paid more attention to them last year, has released some of our favourite beatmakers and some who went on to become pretty, pretty popular. See: Kaytranada.

Aside from having an undisputedly refined ear for good music, the people behind Jakarta Records (I’d love to know more about you, by the way) have the habit of releasing some amazing compilations consisting of the aforementioned good music and, what’s more, giving them away for free.

Last year, their ‘Summer in Jakarta’ compilation not only provided a fantastic soundtrack to the uncharacteristically murderous London heat, but we listened to it so many times that we included two tracks in our latest Podcast #011: Hotel Mo’Fidelity.

And around Christmas, we suggested that you get their ‘For The People للشعب compilation, the proceeds from which went to the Iraqi and Syrian refugees.

Yesterday saw the release of Jakarta Records’ latest seasonal beat bundle ‘Winter in Jakarta’ and we thought it was about time we highlight the label and its work in a separate blog post.

‘Winter in Jakarta’ is yet again filled with the type of inventively produced beat-focused instrumentals with a whole lot of heart and soul in them, carefully chosen samples, creative hip-hop vocals as well as alternative electronic pop.

There’s unreleased material from old favourites like Sango, STWO and IAMNOBODI, whose take on that ‘Bound 2’ sample is called ‘Mr. West’ and is nothing like some other takes that may or may not have been super deserving of their massive success.

Future star producer Mura Masa features with the dreamy ‘The Way I Want You’ while Gilles Peterson favourite Benny Sings offers ‘Straight Lines’ – the first track from his upcoming album and just the kind of emotive indie pop song that we enjoy around here.

From the jazzy sounds of Oddisee and Pat Van Dyke to the broken beats of Craves and all the way to the immense amount of hip-hop talent showcased throughout the release, ‘Winter in Jakarta’ is a musical gift that you definitely shouldn’t miss.

Far from being conventional, Jakarta Records is also offering a cassette tape of the compilation for free – check out the details on the Bandcamp page or on this German website.

There’s also an option to get a limited edition vinyl of ‘Winter in Jakarta’ and be a good person in the process. Go to this post on Jakarta Records’ Facebook page  and place your bid – the money from the proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

The only thing that’s left for you now is to download ‘Winter in Jakarta’ here or stream it in full below.

Enjoying it is a given.
